North Side vs South Side
Most people think of Nepal when they hear "Everest Base Camp." But the Tibetan north side offers something unique: you can drive almost all the way to base camp at 5,200m, and the views of Everest's massive north face are arguably more dramatic.
The Route: Lhasa to EBC
Day 1-3: Lhasa (3,650m)
Acclimatize properly. Visit Potala Palace, monasteries, and temples. This isn't wasted time — it's essential preparation.
Day 4: Lhasa → Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake
The most scenic driving day. Cross Gangbala Pass (4,440m), see the turquoise Yamdrok Lake, pass Karola Glacier, and arrive in Shigatse.
Day 5: Shigatse → Everest Base Camp
The big day. Drive through Dingri and over Gyawula Pass (5,200m), where you can see five peaks over 8,000m in a single panorama — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. Then descend to EBC.
Sunset at Everest
If the weather cooperates, sunset at EBC is life-changing. The north face turns golden, then pink, then deep purple. Set up your camera early.
Altitude Strategy
EBC is at 5,200m — serious altitude. Key tips:
- Spend 3 full days in Lhasa first (non-negotiable)
- Stay hydrated — drink 3-4 liters per day
- Avoid alcohol for the entire trip
- Diamox: Consider taking it starting 1 day before leaving Lhasa
- Oxygen: Your vehicle will have supplemental oxygen available
What to Expect at Base Camp
The tent guesthouse at Rongbuk is basic — shared dorms, no showers, limited electricity. But you're sleeping at 5,200m with Everest outside your window. Bring a warm sleeping bag liner.
Gyawula Pass — The Best Viewpoint
Many people say the view from Gyawula Pass is actually better than from base camp itself. Five 8,000m+ peaks lined up on the horizon. Arrive in clear weather and you'll understand why.
Practical Tips
- Best season: April-May and September-October for clearest views.
- Permits: Tibet Travel Permit + Alien's Travel Permit + Military Permit (all arranged by your agency).
- Temperature at EBC: Can drop to -15°C at night even in summer. Bring serious warm layers.
- Photography: Bring a tripod for sunset/sunrise shots.
