Why 10 Days Changes Everything
The classic 8-day EBC tour is incredible, but adding 2 extra days unlocks an entirely different side of Tibet — the wild northern Changtang Plateau, home to Tibetan antelopes, black-necked cranes, and vast grasslands that stretch to the horizon.
The Changtang Plateau
After Everest, the route heads north through some of the most remote territory in Tibet. The Changtang is the world's second-largest uninhabited area. Here you'll see:
- Tibetan antelopes (chiru) — graceful and endangered, running across the grasslands
- Black-necked cranes — sacred in Tibetan culture, found near lakes
- Wild yaks — massive and shaggy, grazing in herds
- Nomad camps — black yak-hair tents dotting the landscape
The sense of space is overwhelming. No buildings, no fences, just grass and sky.
Namtso Lake — Tibet's Heavenly Lake
At 4,718m, Namtso is one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world. The name means "Heavenly Lake" in Tibetan, and when you see it, you'll understand why.
Tashi Dor Island
A rocky peninsula jutting into the lake, covered in prayer flags and small meditation caves. The hike around it takes about 2 hours and offers 360-degree views of the lake and the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range.
Best Time for Photos
Sunrise and sunset are magical. The lake surface turns from deep blue to gold to pink. If you're lucky with clear skies, the Milky Way over Namtso is one of the best astrophotography locations in the world.
The Tibetan Herbal Bath
Back in Lhasa after 9 days of high-altitude travel, treat yourself to a traditional Tibetan herbal bath. It's a UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage — hot water infused with Tibetan medicinal herbs. Your muscles will thank you.
Practical Tips
- Fitness level: Moderate. No technical trekking, but 10 days at altitude is demanding.
- Best season: May to October (Changtang roads can be impassable in winter).
- Packing: Bring binoculars for wildlife spotting on the Changtang.
- Connectivity: No cell signal for much of the Changtang section. Embrace the disconnect.
